Warpaint

Warpaint

Many “understated” artists have sprung up in the wake of the XX’s success, but not only are Warpaint by far the most intriguing, they’ve supported and also pre-dated them. Formed as long ago as 2004, they first started making waves with their ‘Exquisite Corpse’ EP in 2007, before this year’s debut album ‘The Fool’, which has made itself at home in pretty much every end-of-year list you can find.

Mixing psychedelia and art-rock, their minimal sound makes their songs both beautiful and unsettling at the same time. ‘Undertow’ sees them at their most melodic, with a dreamy hook, while Emily Kokal’s vocals on the likes of ‘Set Your Arms Down’ and ‘Composure’ recall the bruised tones of Cat Power or PJ Harvey.

The perfect soundtrack as the nights draw in and you have to trudge through the snow, Warpaint are a band to get lost in.
