Alt J

Leeds genre-hoppers jump (folk) up

Back to Ones to Watch

If you press "Alt" and "J" on a Mac, you get a triangle, and it seems these Leeds boys are very fond of them indeed - the song 'Tessellate' even features the line "Triangles are my favourite shape" just in case you were in any doubt.

Singer Joe Newman brings to mind Devendra Banhart or Bombay Bicycle Club's Jack Steadman as he veers between quivering falsetto and bassy chanting, and the band's relentless genre hopping brings to mind everything from backpack hip-hop to Wild Beasts to Hot Chip.

'Jump-folk' and 'trip-folk' are two of Alt-J's own tags for what they do - whatever you want to call it, it's compelling stuff.
