U2 will get to headline Glastonbury Festival a year later than originally planned, organisers have revealed.
The group will top the Pyramid Stage on the Friday (24 June) night ahead of performances from Coldplay on the Saturday (25 June) and Beyonce on the Sunday (26 June).
The news was announced at the NME Awards via a video message from guitarist, The Edge, who was congratulating Michael and Emily Eavis on winning the Best Festival award.
“It’s more a way of life than a festival,” he said about Glastonbury, “I made it last year to the Friday show – got to play with Muse, got to hang out, ate a veggie burger and fries, and got to play on the Pyramid Stage.
“I have to say there is something really special and iconic about that stage. So we’re all looking forward to coming back to pick up where I left off. And we’re so excited to get to play in front of the world’s greatest festival audience. We’ll see you there.”
Michael Eavis added: “After the disappointment of U2 being unable to play last year, we’re now doubly excited at the prospect of the Friday night supergroup breaking the sound barrier.”
Today (Wednesday) organisers also announced a new Green Traveller scheme, which will give festival-goers who arrive by public transport or bicycle, extra benefits.
Those given a Green Traveller laynard will receive:
– Vouchers for discounts on main meals
– Solar showers, solely provided for Green Travellers
– Access to compost toilets
– Discount on a Festival T-shirt
Speaking about the scheme, organisers said: “Over 50 per cent of Glastonbury Festival’s CO2 total emissions come from how “you” the Festival goer make your way to the site. We understand that public transport can be expensive and we are working on trying to keep the prices fair.
And yes, we know that getting on a train or bus isn’t necessarily as easy as jumping in a car parked outside your house. But once you have decided to head for your bike, the bus stop or the train station, we’ll do our best to make Festival life a little bit easier for you – from the moment you’re dropped right by the gate!”
