Sunday's headliners dazzled fans with their first UK festival appearance in more than 30 years, making good creative use of some of the younger talent on the line-up...
The Rolling Stones propelled the final night of the 2007 Isle of Wight Festival into the rock history books with a one hour and forty five minute set of 15 songs – a slightly reduced version of their current European Stadium Tour set. Opening with Start Me Up, the band were on super energetic form with Mick Jagger sprinting from end to end of the colossal stage, which had been especially enlarged to accommodate the legends.
Apart from upbeat new song Rough Justice, the set-list was switched to crowd-pleasing classics. Surprise unannounced duets arrived courtesy of Paolo Nutini (on Robert Johnson cover Love In Vain) and Amy Winehouse (Ain't Too Proud To Beg), both unannounced.
Keith Richards took centre stage on I Wanna Hold You and Slipping Away – whilst Jagger amused fans by babbling: "It feels amazing to be at a festival – it's been such a long time. This is a great one, but it is a bit expensive though… two pounds for a water, four pounds for a burger… and a dog ate my dope!"
Although the festival stage lacked the high tech trimmings of the band's expansive (and expensive) stadium set, the 'B – Stage' – a small platform set in the middle of the crowd, connected to the main stage by a narrow walkway, was present, complete with a motorised 'train' that transported the band members from main to B stage whilst they were performing.
After two encores (the first comprising Sympathy For The Devil and the second Brown Sugar and Jumping Jack Flash), the band took their final bow and the night ended in a spectacular display of fireworks. A fitting end to a stunningly brilliant festival (and that wasn't just the sunshine).
Other highlights at the three day event had included Kasabian and yesterday's headliners Muse plus James Morrisson, Paulo Nutini, The Fratellis and Keane (earlier today). Read our Live Blogs (updated throughout the festival) and full reviews for more.
