The Prodigy destroy the Isle of Wight Festival

The Prodigy eclipsed all the other bands at the opening day of the Isle of Wight Festival, bringing the event to witching hour with an energetic set of hits.

With a huge production set the band were looking as energetic and sprightly as they’ve ever been as they ran through tracks like ‘Breathe’, ‘Poison’ and set closer ‘Outta Space’.

Referring to the crowd as their “warriors”, the band peppered their set with tracks from their latest album ‘Invaders Must Die’ including the title track, ‘Omen’ and ‘Warrior’s Dance’.

“I ain’t come to fuck around anymore,”
Maxim told the crowd, “where’s the poison?” before launching into ‘Poison’. The crowd were just as frenetic as the band following performances from Basement Jaxx.

The band, who could easily headline the festival, threw together a party set that included as many costume changes as it did songs. Kings Of Leon’s ‘Sex Is On Fire’ and Rusko’s ‘Cockney Thug’ were included alongside their own numbers like new track ‘Raindrops’.

‘Red Alert’, ‘Bingo Bango’ and crowd pleaser ‘Where’s Your Head At?’ all featured with as the band brought out people in gorilla and panda costumes to dance along to the music. The two frontwomen continually changed during the set from everything from tracksuits to ball gowns.

Earlier in the day Pendulum finally played the long hibernated ‘Tarantula’ along with ‘Propane Nightmares’ and ‘Slam’ as they acted to a pre-curser to the two main acts of the day.

Sneaky Sound System and Iglu And Hartley also performed in the sunshine as the first day of the festival kicked off. Despite being a sell out, the festival seemed to be low in attendance.

We asked a couple of festival-goers who they wanted to see over the weekend, Paul Strickland from Cowes said, “Fearne Cotton. She’s doing the TV stuff, so I’m hoping to see her,” while Nick Venables, also from Cowes said, “the bar, oh and Neil Young.”

The action continues at the Isle of Wight Festival 2009 today with sets from Stereophonics, Razorlight, The Maccabees and more.
