They may be older, wiser and slightly more rotund (minus Serj Tankian of course, unless he was hiding a beer belly beneath his hoodie) but System of A Down are back to teach the kids how to rock a true metal set.
Even though Alice Cooper may be giving more of an absurd show at Download Festival 2011, fans would be missing opener ‘Prison Song’ followed by ‘BYOB’- dance-metal without all your newfangled dubsteppy breakdowns.
While there were comic elements – Tankian’s big pink monkey toy and the silliness of ‘Cigaro’ and its big cock refrains – the set was brimful of metal; dirty metal that fans stood in freezing temperatures for.
As the set drew to a close with a mental performance of ‘Toxicity’ and ‘Sugar’, fans should feel like they’ve got your money’s worth.
Download Festival 2011 concludes tomorrow (Sunday) with a headline show from Linkin Park.
