Sonisphere boss Stuart Galbraith has spoken out in commendation of Metallica's 'consummate professionalism' and groundbreaking vision, and states that 'Biffy have earned their slot'.
The festival director told RockAAA.com: “Metallica are as big as any band in the world. They have embraced the concept of Sonisphere from the beginning and for that I am enormously grateful.
“We are breaking new ground together and Metallica are the consummate professionals and never cease to amaze me when they head onto the stage. The Big Four will be at Knebworth for first time this year and we are very honoured and proud to have them.”
His comments come in the wake of media reports which last week quoted Download Festival booker Andy Copping as calling the metal giants “Boring” – claims he has since strongly refuted, saying he was “hideously misquoted”.
On the Knebworth event’s other headliners, Galbraith waxed: “I genuinely believe we have one of the strongest rock line-ups in my 26-years of promoting festivals. Slipknot are also a band a lot of people feared they would never see again after the tragic death of Paul Gray. But we don’t only have Slipknot at Knebworth, we have them at 10 other Sonisphere’s. Slipknot will be the last band on the main stage on the Sunday which will be a huge moment and a fitting tribute to Paul.“
On booking Biffy Clyro, which raised a few pierced eyebrows among the festival’s metal fans, Galbraith admitted: “We took a leap of faith booking Biffy but that has paid off as they have grown and become one of the UKs biggest rock bands. We started speaking to them six-months ago and they have really grown and are headlining on merit.”
Sonisphere has rocketed to become the world’s largest touring festival in less than three years, surprising many in the industry, including Galbraith himself.
“If someone had told me we would be where we are in such a short space of time I wouldn’t have believed it”, he said, adding: “One of the key elements to that is to learn that every territory is different and what works in Turkey may not work in Helsinki. It is important to look at each territory and learn what they want.“
Galbraith also reinforced his personal promise that Sonisphere festival goers will never have to choose between big-name acts as he has pledged to retain the festival’s traditional rotating stage system – indefinitely.
