Smashing Pumpkins tipped for Download

A little bird has revealed that Smashing Pumpkins are lining up a huge comeback show at this year's Download Festival. The reuinted rockers have already confirmed major festival dates in Germany this summer.

The seminal 90’s rockers reformed in 2005 with frontman Billy Cogan and drummer Jimmy Chamberlain, and have been working steadily on a new studio album for release this spring. No details have been given on which other – if any – members of the Pumpkins will feature in the re-union, but guitarist James Iha is not thought to be involved.

This week, the band have confirmed their first live shows of 2007 at Germany’s huge Rock Am Ring and Rock Im Park Festivals, on June 2nd and 3rd. And with the UK’s flagship rock festival, Download in Donington, coming less than a week after the Germany show (8-10 June) – it seems the band look set to make their live return to the UK in style.

According to reports, the band will play a low-key slot prior to Iron Maiden‘s headline set on Sunday night.

So far, the only official confirmations for this year’s Download are the three headliners (which also include My Chemical Romance on the Friday and Linkin Park on Sunday). Stay posted for more announcements in the coming weeks.
