San Francisco metal giants Metallica have announced plans to release a CD box set of 27 live sets, including Glastonbury Festival and Sonisphere, at the end of the year.
The band played two triumphant festival sets in the UK this summer: Sonisphere 2014 in July and a more controversial headline appearance at Glastonbury Festival 2014 – which turned out to be an unmitigated truimph.
The box set of all Metallica shows from 2014 (26 double-disc shows, plus 1 single disc of Metallica acoustic from 5/12/14) will ship by mid-December and is open for pre-orders now.
Releasing live performances has become something of a musical vocation for Metallica, who have a whole website at livemetallica.com dedicated to the sale of Metallica live shows from across the world. The Glastonbury Festival and Sonisphere sets are available to download right now, priced at $9.95 for a whole live album in MP3 format, or $0.99 per song. Whole albums are also available in a range of file formats and qualities, with the highest quality FLAC-HD format costing $17.95.
However if you want the physical release you’re going to have to wait. It looks likely that a CD from both UK shows this summer will be released individually in the Autumn, priced roughly at $19.81.
Metallica said: “To celebrate ten years of Live Metallica we’re going “old school” by now offering shows on compact disc! Remember those? Starting now, each week we will be releasing three shows from the 2014 By Request dates on Mondays. To keep it simple, the first three shows of 2014 from Bogata, Colombia, Quito, Ecuador and Lima, Peru are now available. Next Monday the next three shows from the South American run will be available and so on.
“For you vinyl junkies, we will be releasing select shows on limited edition 180 gram vinyl. Head over here to vote for your favs and the top four shows that receive the most votes will be pressed up for you to order in early 2015.“
