Franz And Primal Scream Crown Reading

Franz Ferdinand and Primal Scream brought day one of the Reading to a fitting close, the two bands wowing crowds during their respective headline sets...

Franz Ferdinand played a familiar headlining set, kicking off with 'Michael' and 'Come On Home' before running through cuts of their two albums, including stomp-alongs 'Matinee', 'The Fallen', 'Take Me Out' and set closer 'This Fire'.

The show highlight, however, was penultimate song 'Outsiders', during which members from The Long Blondes, Kaiser Chiefs, Fields and Towers Of London were invited on stage to help play drums, as the band did earlier in the summer at T In The Park.

Over on the NME/Radio 1 Stage Primal Scream ran through a greatest hits set, starting on 'Movin On Up', through crowd favourites 'Jailbird' and 'Swastika Eyes', before closing with 'Country Girl' and an extended 'Rocks'.

Kaiser Chiefs played a storming evening set on the Main Stage, showcasing a new song 'Angry Mob' for the first time, as well as future hit 'Everything Is Average Nowadays'.

The Leeds Brit rockers also played all the favourites, including 'Modern Life', which also featured The Cribs' singer Ryan Jarman on vocals. 'I Predict A Riot' went down a storm with Ricky Wilson asking the crowd 'We're better than Girls Aloud aren't we?' in reference to the pop acts' cover version at last weekend's V Festival.

Earlier, Yeah Yeah Yeahs played one of the sets of the day, the highlights being an acoustic version of 'Maps' and recent hits 'Cheated Hearts' and 'Turn Into'. The band tricked the crowd by sending out a trio of lookalikes at the beginning of the set.

Other great sets from day one at Reading included Gogol Bordello, Mystery Jets, Guillemots and Audioslave.
