Word soon got out about a secret Ed Sheeran show on Camp Bestival 2011's Dingly Dell forest trail and the gates to the magical path through the trees were rapidly closed off.
Luckily for some, a good few had staked a place early enough to catch this intimate moment with the teenage popstar.
Playing through a seriously inadequate vocal PA with those at the back struggled to make out anything more than the odd word, Sheeran ran through a slew of new material and kept up a friendly banter with those at the front.
Although there were shades of Nizlopi about his delivery, Ed Sheeran has managed to avoid the trap of offending the opinion shapers by not launching his career with a quirky one-hitter.
Instead he’s challenging the charts with intelligent and thoughtful pop that unashamedly comes out of the folk tradition.
Sets like this one show that despite his recent success his feet are still firmly on the ground and he understands the importance of staying close to his grassroots fans.
Rounding off with an acapella traditional Irish pub song, the young man with a bright future held the audience genuinely transfixed right up to the last haunting note.
