It played out like a gay anthems mix tape as Beth Ditto stormed the Lovebox 2011 stage in her underwear.
Despite troublesome sound issues at the start of the set, the star wowed an emotional festival crowd as she performed songs from her new post-Gossip disco album.
Clad at first in a green and white poncho, then a psychedelic clingy dress and finally a bra and briefs, Ditto smoked a cigarette and drank neat spirits from a plastic cup.
Among the highlights of the set were covers of ‘Jolene’, ‘Vogue’ and ‘Don’t Stop The Music’ as well as a pitch-perfect rendition of Dusty Springfield’s ‘Son Of A Preacher Man’ sung off-stage while Beth was getting her kit off.
During the Rhianna cover, the singer climbed into the crowd completely bouncer-less and walked amongst devotees kissing and hugging them, all the while singing along.
Collapsing on stage at the end, she was escorted off by four male dancers, as she belted out: “Power to the people!”
Ryan, 36, from South Woodford, said: “Very good voice, she was really in the moment!”
