Aloe Blacc needs no help at Big Chill

After children were marched off to bed and sunglasses had long been fitted to the tops of heads, Aloe Blacc filled a tent at The Big Chill 2011.

Chants of: “Aloe, Aloe, Aloe,” helped amuse the rump of Chillers filling The Reveller’s Stage before the star took to the stage.

Arriving just as the clocked ticked 10pm, the American walked onstage to an ensemble of tracks as if he was on an American chat show.

He strolled on to an instrumental version of his standout track ‘I Need A Dollar’ before running into ‘Hey Brother‘.

With plenty of samples and opportunities for call and response from the audience, the performance was an outstanding lesson in showmanship.

In a grey trilby, rollneck and red leather jacket, Blacc oozed cool as he echoed Sly and The Family Stone, Marvin Gaye and Otis Redding in sound and swagger.

Good Things‘ and ‘Femme Fatale‘ were brilliant while ‘Green Lights‘ an a rare showing of ‘Tonight, Downtown‘ were enough to keep fans snubbing the start of the Chemical Brothers.

The audience got involved again on ‘You Make Me Smile‘ as the soul man drew out his set for one hour and 15 minutes. Not that you’d notice.

It was up to ‘I Need A Dollar‘ to round off a fantastic and unforgettable showing at the first day of the festival.
