Band won't be playing festivals in 2011 says Barat

Rumours of further reunion gigs were rife following last year's well-received Reading and Leeds comeback shows, with a Glastonbury slot and a huge Hyde Park show expected to happen in 2011.

Gossip was stoked further when news broke that Barat's new funding deal with Power Amp included "a meaningful amount from Libertines gigs."

However, in an email to fans today, Barat moved to end the rumours, saying that it "would not be right" to play further gigs without new material from the band.

The singer wrote: "Just to quell any speculation there will not be any Libertines shows this summer. As perfect as last year was, Peter [Doherty] and I have not written anything new together at this point. We are all busy doing very different things separately."

Barat begins a nine-date UK Tour on 29 March, ahead of the release of a new EP and European shows, while Pete Doherty has an extensive array of solo dates lined up for the autumn.

On top of this, Barat stressed that he had "just accepted a part in a very different project which will consume a lot of next year”.

He couldn't quite resist leaving things open though, raising the prospect that a third Libertines album would happen eventually: "Truly moving as it was to play Reading, Leeds and the Forum it would not be right to do this every year without new material as I'm sure most would agree. You never know though, some day I hope we'll write the next album."
