Coldplay to headline Glastonbury: festival-goers react

Chris Martin and Co are set to top the bill on the Saturday (25 June) night, ahead of fellow-headliner Beyonce who is set to close the festival on Sunday (26 June).

U2 are hotly-tipped to headline on Friday (24 June) after they had to pull out in 2010.

An hour after the announcement, the Glastonbury Festival Facebook page had attracted 379 ‘likes’ and 233 comments, with both positive and negative replies receiving ‘likes’ from other users.

Seb Makemson earned ten likes for: “Oh well theres [sic] plenty more bands to watch”, while Zak Kinnear revealed: “They really surprised me in 2005. One of the best gigs I’ve ever seen.”

Fan Tom Undy said has seen the crooning foursome twice, once in Manchester in 2008 and again at Rock Werchter in 2009. “Clearly the negative comments are coming from people that have never been to see Coldplay live before,” he wrote, “They were amazing both times and everyone is in for a treat that’s going to Glasto [sic] this year!!”

Other users referred to rumours of Radiohead as a headliner, fired up after Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood performed a secret show together at last year’s event. Maria Kristiansson collected two ‘likes’ when she said: “Heard of Radiohead’s new album?”

Some, like Sarah Evans, admonished others for ingratitude. She said, “Does it really matter?? You’re going to be at Glastonbury, surrounded by loads of people and you’re going to be in a zone! I bet ALL of you will be singing along when you get down there! Stop being so bloody rude!!!!!”

The announcement signals Coldplay’s return to the festival, after performances in 2005, 2002 and 2000.

VF described how “the euphoria [was] almost visible” at their headline set in 2005, and their most recent performances have wowed audiences with incredible light shows.

For others, Glastonbury Festival is more about the place and the mentality than the headliners. Travis Ritch quoted Rhett Butler from Gone With the Wind: “Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn.”

Meanwhile, Haroon Thantrey backhandedly complimented the festival’s diversity: “Thank god there are 40 stages.”

With so much music on offer, Coldplay’s headline slot could be nothing more than a crowd-magnet that makes the Other Stage more intimate, but it could be so much more.

Zak Kinnear likened their slot to the 2008 news that Beyonce's husband would headline, saying: “It’ll be fun to see how everyone’s opinion changes after they play. It’ll be Jay-Z all over again.”

Glastonbury Festival 2011 will take place at Worthy Farm in Pilton, Somerset from 22-26 June.
