Dry The River kick start Eurosonic Nooderslag 2011

Spain's Delorean play a wet first day at the Dutch event

For the first time in the festival’s 25-year history, fans were able to get a small glimpse of some of the best emerging talent in Europe on the Wednesday before the event takes over Gronigen fully from today (Thursday).

A reduced schedule saw rising folk stars Dry the River wow the main room of Shadrak following on from the European Festival Awards 2010, which were also held in the northern city.

The band, who are expected to have a busy schedule ahead of them this summer, brought the damp British weather with them as they wooed the audience with tracks like ‘History Book’ and ‘Demons’.

Other stand out tracks included a glorious ‘New Ceremony’ and final track ‘Weights And Measures’.

“It was fun,” frontman Pete Liddle told Virtual Festivals, “it was good to be playing again. We had a little break after Christmas and this was our first electric show of the year, so it was nice to get back into it.”

Around the corner, Spain’s Delorean drove the festival into the early hours with a set of Balearic indie dance.

There were samples of Black Box’s ‘Ride On Time’ chucked in as the group, who spoke very little during the set, ran through the likes of ‘Seasun’ and ‘Real Love’.

It was on ‘Stay Close’ that the band really got into it though as keyboardist Unai Lazcano struggled to keep his instrument from bouncing around the stage as he danced.

Eurosonic Nooderslag 2011 continues today with shows from The Joy Formidable, James Blake, Mount Kimbie, Islet and more.
