The band wiggled, jived and generally threw themselves around to ‘Best Friend’, and ‘Forever And Ever, Amen’.

Halfway through the set lead singer Jonathan Pierce announced, “this song is about having fun, which is the only thing that matters these days,” as they launched into a rousing rendition of ‘I Need Fun In My Life’. The crowds clearly agreed.

The gig was the first in Liverpool for the American band and given their warm welcome, they will probably return.

Meanwhile at Mojo, Field Music were headlining another of Liverpool Music Week’s free gigs.

The five-piece from Sunderland opened with ‘Something Familiar’ and also played the incredibly familiar ‘Rockist’ - a song written by Field Music’s David Brewis as a side project, recently featured in an advert for a well-known car manufacturer.

The small intimate venue allowed them to get involved in some lively banter with the audience regarding the recent performance of their football team with some of the crows holding the band personally responsible for Sunderland’s recent bad result.

Whilst The Drums were still doing their hair in the dressing room, the audience at the O2 Academy had been treated to a set from Two Wounded Birds. Their Beach Boys inspired sound on ‘Summer Dream’ bringing a ray of metaphorical sunshine to the damp evening.

Intriguing band name aside, this fresh faced indie-pop outfit went down well with the crowd. In fact, the only boos came when they announced it was their last song.

Both venues were packed, despite the awful autumnal weather. That so many people had braved the cold and the wet to get a Tuesday night fix of live music is a testament to the varied line up and open atmosphere of the Northern winter festival.

Liverpool Music Week 2010 continues tonight (Wednesday) with Dan Le Sac V. Scroobius Pip at the O2 Academy and Egyptian Hip Hop headlining tonight’s free show at Mojo.
