The former Specials man brought on Johnny Clarke, Rico Rodriguez, Anthony Joseph
and even Arthur Brown for a remarkable appearance on the West Holts Stage.
Conducting
a full orchestra, Dammers reworked The Specials hit ‘Ghost Town’ as well as covering a number of Sunn Ra Arkestra
songs including ‘Where Pathways Meet’ and ‘Egypt Strut’.
Jamaican reggae singer Johnny
Clarke was the first guest to appear on ‘Where Pathways Meet’ and ‘Declaration Of Rights’
before trombonist Ricco Rodriguez helped out on a cover of ‘Samson’ by Tommy McCook.
The best response, however, was for Arthur Brown, a man who Dammers said “created prog rock,”
before the band launched into a unrehearsed reggae cover of Brown’s infamous ‘Fire’.
Ending
with Sun Ra Arkestra’s ‘Space Is The Place’, the group then filed off into the crowd to continue playing
down there.
