Thousands arrive early to scorching Glastonbury

Most of the early arrivals headed straight to the Pyramid Stage to watch England defeat Slovenia in the World Cup, with the game producing a crowd to flatter any of the headliners the Somerset soiree has hosted down the years.??

With the car parks open a day earlier, traffic seemed to have eased compared to recent festivals but a number of gates were reported to be suffering from congestion near wrist-banding points.

Once in, festival-goers made the most of the sweltering sunshine, which pushed the thermometer past the mid-20s.

The good weather looks to continue over the weekend as revellers have the pick of over 1,000 performers with Gorillaz, Muse and Stevie Wonder crowning an extensive bill.

Glastonbury first-timer, Liz Harris from Cambridge, was one of the many to make the trip to the site: “I’ve been a bit hot and bothered, but I’m having a very nice time,” she said, “I’m looking forward to Shakira, Rolf Harris and Pet Shop Boys. I wanted to see Rodrigo y Gabrielle but they clash with Stevie Wonder.”

Virtual Festivals will be at Glastonbury Festival 2010 all weekend, bringing you all news, gossip, and exclusive shows and finding out if life really does start at 40.
