Sonisphere Poland was some way to start the summer tour. Anthrax
kicked things off and nearly 30 years after they formed, they played to their biggest-ever audience. This was Joey
Belladonna’s first show since rejoining the band and he played ‘Only’ for the first time ever. Another highlight
was during ‘Indians’ when they broke into a tribute to Ronnie James Dio with a cover of ‘Heaven
and Hell’.
Megadeth were also welcoming back
a former member in original bass player, David Ellefson and with metal nostalgia in the air, they celebrated
the 20th anniversary of ‘Rust in Peace’, by playing the classic thrash metal album in its entirety before finishing
with four of their biggest-ever hits.
Slayer were
simply Slayer. Classic track followed classic track in a trademark tight performance, with the Polish crowd also treated to
‘World Painted Blood’ and ‘Hate Worldwide’ from the new album. It was good to see Tom Araya
looking back to his best after his recent back injury.
Kerry King then stuck around to watch the
whole of Metallica’s mammoth set from the side of the
stage, as did local metal hero Nergal from Behemoth. “I fucking love these guys,” he said before he got
on stage. “The last time they really blew me away.”
They did the same to the crowd here…almost
literally with the pyrotechnics during ‘Fuel’, ‘Blackened’ and ‘Enter Sandman’. As James
Hetfield put it: “This is the greatest metal show on earth.”
