The Big One: Big Session Festival 2010
United Kingdom | 11 June 2010
We look ahead to the biggest festival draw this weekend, Big Session Festival.
What is it?
Big Session is a lovingly stitched woollen jumper of a folk festival that has as much to keep the little’uns amused as it does the adults. With a range of real ales, ciders and perrys that could make Shane MacGowan blush and a KidsZone that’s as jam-packed as one of its music making workshops.
When and where?
Big Session takes place at De Montfort Hall and Gardens in Leicester from Friday 18 June to Sunday 20 June.
Five to watch:
Dreadzone – The bubbly dub and reggae electronica of Dreadzone should add a bit of diversity to the main folk thread of the event.
John Smith – Acoustic ramblings that vocally touch on Ray Lamontage.
Stornoway – Patience and luscious nu-folk that echoes the likes Mumford And Sons.
Kate Rusby – Soulful folk following the traditional Celtic template, except she’s from Sheffield.
Oysterband – It would be rude to join the party and not watch the electric folk stylings of Oysterband.
One to miss
The Proclaimers – 80s acoustic pop that you’ll best off running 500 miles from.
Playing a rare festival date
Chumbawumba – Who knew the versatile politician-baiting Tubthumpers were even still going?
Be at Big Session if you like…
A variety of good drink, folk music, having your children at a festival, folk music, having a green conscious, folk music and er, folk music.
You’re looking to mosh with a pint of Carling in your hand and swear like a trooper.
Mark your territory with a deckchair and picnic blanket before dropping the little ones off in the KidsZone. Then relax and let the festival unravel around you as you intermittently explore the site, real ale in hand.
Fashionista or folky?
Definitely folky, pack your favourite knitted garbs and wear with pride!
Alcohol of choice
Real ale. Each year the festival offers dozens of real ales from local and regional micro breweries, as well as a selection of ciders and perrys – you’ll be spoilt for choice.
Take your mum score – 9/10
Plenty of wonderful folk music and drink, she have a wonderful time while you explore the children’s area.
Can I still get tickets?
Tickets are still on sale for just £75 for an adult weekend with children, family and day passes knocking about too.
