Gorillaz take U2 Glastonbury slot: festival-goers react
What the Internet world has to say about the subject

Leanne Kelsall - 26 May 2010
Glastonbury announced the new headliners on their website as an official statement: “We're very pleased to
announce that the Friday night Pyramid Stage headline slot which U2 have been forced to vacate will now be taken by Gorillaz, who called offering their services once the
news about U2 had broken.”
Within minutes Facebook users were airing their views with 513 'likes' within an hour of
the news being made public.
There were hundreds of comments on Glastonbury’s official Facebook page
applauding the festival for the new act including Robert Lewis who said: “Glasto [sic] is saved!”
Non-U2 fans were also quick to make their feelings
clear. Dan Hardwick voiced his opinion on the Gorillaz
addition: “This is class. Actually got a contemporary act that pushes the boundaries of music, not some ageing rockers
who make albums that sound the same every time.”
Daniela Emilia Federici added: “The
Glastonbury gods are back on form, best news I’ve heard this festival season. Sooooooo [sic] much better than U2! Thank
you.”
Whilst many users are excited by the news some remain convinced that the act could have been
bigger, Mat Bonell posted: “Why didn't Bono get on the dog and bone to some of his showbiz
mates? He's got jagger's [sic] number…stones would've been way better than the gorrilaz [sic] i [sic] want
to see a band i [sic] can actually see, not watch on a music video.”
Karl Rouse was
keen on the idea: “Good choice, but they could have really pulled something out the bag, but I’m happy!”
This caused a lot of support for the band with Ben Rhys-Lewis posting: “This is
what Glasto [sic] is all about. You cant [sic] get more contemporary than the Gorillaz. Damon must have enjoyed last year
(I certainly did) and is coming back to wow us again. Its [sic] going to be collaboration heaven! Murdoc's quote says
it all!”
Elsewhere across the social networking world Twitter users got involved as
well as Gorillaz font man
himself posted a tweet, MurdocGorillaz: “Yes! It’s true. The Greatest Show on Earth (Gorillaz)
is coming to The Greatest Festival in the World (Glastonbury). What could be better..?”
Many Glastonbury
fans have been noting that the new addition will clash with the Flaming Lips, Carljoesbury@webstl said: “Overall
meh [sic]. I like Gorillaz
a lot, but not enough to tempt me away from The Lips.”
More twitter users joined in on the excited
posts amongst fans, siboypresents said: “Gorillaz
replace U2 at Glasto. Could that have worked
out any better? Answer: NO!”
Miffo cheekily added: “Is looking forward to
Gorillaz with or without you.”
Festival organiser, Michael Eavis, said: "This is going to be Gorilllaz' only
UK festival appearance, and it'll be a massive audio visual spectacle which will really ignite the Pyramid on the Friday
night, with Muse, then Stevie Wonder to follow.”
He added: “I'm very excited about
Gorillaz' show coming here because they're so open to guests and collaborations. The alchemy of Friday's show
is going to be astonishing: a perfect, contemporary way to kick off the 40th anniversary celebrations. I am so grateful for
the enthusiasm of the media and the whole of the music industry for their willingness and eagerness to support us in what
could have been a crisis.”
