From Afrika Bambaataa to Wild Beasts

Organiser Dave gives the lowdown on the Liverpool event

Well what can I say.  I do not know whether I am  coming or going... (some would say my arse from my elbow). The last few weeks have been as Bonkers as a Dizzee Rascal tune (watch out Ivor Novello).  Since we last spoke I have been over to cowboy country deep in Texas at SxSW to deliver our 5th Liverpool Sound City party. Suffice to say we smashed it. Once again we had queues around the block for the latest  smattering of all that is fine from the NW. This year we had some amazing performances from artists such as Lost Brothers and John Smith. Highlights were the new pups on the block Ten Bears as well as the odd but strangely appealing Lovely Eggs. The day was rounded off in grand style by the wonderful Wave Machines. There was not a dry eye in the house...

Anyway we are all back home now safe and sound... despite electrical storms over NYC which gave me the jitters and made me think of every plane disaster movie I have seen since I was 12 years of age... A vivid and creative imagination can sometimes be such a curse.

So to all things Liverpool Sound City. Even if I was not involved with it I think I would be so so excited at the prospect.It is shaping up to be the best yet.  

We launch with the legendary Gil Scott-Heron on 29th April then during our 4 days to DIY for we have it all.... Paloma Faith in Liverpool Philharmonic Hall, The Maccabees performing 2 shows (one in conjunction with Underage Festival - first sojourn out of the big smoke), Ian McCulloch back in St Georges (triumphant return since his Crystal Days performance), some of Manchester’s old and new skool including The Fall, Delphic, Everything Everything and Egyptian Hip Hop. On the rock tip we have Blackout, Attack Attack and some blistering names to announce next week... As if this wasn’t enough we also have British Sea Power, the irrepressible Chilly Gonzales, Wild Beasts, Blood Red Shoes, Speech Debelle....

DEEP BREATH HERE

Sound City is much more than just an amazing music festival. We have confirmed the Godfather of Hip Hop Afrika Bambaataa who is performing a one off (18th May) and coming to  Sound City with his mate Ernie Pannicioli. Who is Ernie I here you ask? Ernie is seen as God to most American Hip Hop legends.  He has archived US Hip Hop from its very early days to the present and has worked with... well everyone. He will be doing a special Q&A with his mate Bambaataa at the Sound City conference. We will also be showing the UK premiere of ‘The Sixth Element- The Other Side of Hip Hop’ with a special intro from Bam the Man. Ernie will also have a photo exhibition on show at Sound City showing some of his key portraits of Hip Hop legends from the  past 30 years.

Other film specials include a Directors cut of the highly acclaimed ‘Oil City Confidential’ (20th May) with a Q&A with Julien Temple and axe supremo Wilko Johnson.....who will then run off to perform a  show later that night!

The best way to get the best hit from the Sound City experience is to get your wristband which gets you into just about everything as well as  the coolest VIP parties and secret events and shows on offer.

In a nutshell Liverpool Sound City is 35 venues, 400 bands, 35000 revellers...4 days of business and hedonism in the coolest city on this planet. Come and join us.
