AIF launches festival 'twinning' scheme
Events to undergo cultural exchange with foreign counterparts

Ben Parkinson - 01 March 2010
Under the new initiative, festivals will be encouraged to partake in artist exchanges, mutually advertise using each other’s
websites and flyers and hold competitions with each other’s tickets as the prizes.
The first sets of twins
will include such partnerships as Bestival and the German Melt! Festival, Glade
Festival and Symbiosis Gathering in California and Field Day with Oya Festival
in Norway. AIF hope to have all the festivals they represent twinned by next summer.
AIF co-founder Rob
Challice believes this is merely a formalisation of the mutual inspiration already present among independent festivals.
He says: "Independent festival organisers have often taken inspiration from other events with a similar ethos, creative
vision and maverick style.
“Through this AIF initiative we can formally acknowledge this by "twinning"
our events and hope that it leads to many creative partnerships."
The Association of Independent
Festivals is a non-profit body set up in 2008 to represent independent festivals in the UK and Ireland.
