The Darkness: Knebworth in their DNA!
07 August 2003
The Darkness singer Justin Hawkins gives us his impressions of playing in front of 375,000 people at the record-breaking Knebworth
Park shows with Robbie Williams last weekend!
"Knebworth
was an astonishing experience - Robbie Williams was about as nice as pie, and we bonded with Ash and the girls
from Moby's string section. Despite the searing heat, the crowds absolutely kicked arse and a great time was had by
all".
The 'Stately Home of Rock' that is Knebworth Park made its name in the Seventies with shows by
The Rolling Stones,
Led Zeppelin,
Pink Floyd and
Queen. It's a measure of the spectacular rise of the band that they were
picked to play with Robbie at the sold out shows but in many ways the venue was entirely appropriate for the band. As the
ever-eloquent Justin put it:
"A band of our ilk is genetically determined to achieve the honour of performing at Knobwerth [sic]. It's in our DNA. We've
waited years for this opportunity and we're truly grateful and honoured to have been invited!
The Darkness are now off around European festival circuit through
August playing with
The Rolling Stones,
Metallica and
Linkin Park before returning to the UK for the
Leeds and
Reading festivals and their nationwide tour in October.
Following the No2 success of their debut album 'Permission to Land' their new single 'I Believe In A Thing Called Love' will
also be released in the UK on September 15th.
