Quick thinking security were said to have swiftly identified 100 potential 'trouble makers' within the 500 strong thong, and acted to prevent the frivolity from becoming violent.
A spokesman for the local police said: "They ran round and destroyed fencing. There was a risk that both people and property would be damaged. We decided therefore to remove people in order to avert any further crime,"
Many of the arrested protested their innocence, such as 22-year-old Mattias Jansson, who told newspaper Aftonbladet: "All we were doing is dancing and singing about love and freedom. Suddenly were carted off without an explanation"
All 105 detained were subsequently released without explanation. No charges are pending against the group.
Hultsfred
(Sweden's biggest annual rock festival) took place from 12 to 14 July, and featured Radiohead, The
Stereophonics, Audioslave and Massive Attack.
Sweden has a very intolerent policy towards alcohol, which makes it difficult for young people to obtain beer. It is illegal to consume alcohol in public areas, and at Hultsfred, for example, beer can only be consumed in the beer tents. As such, when the Swedish youths do get drunk, they really go for it, as we observed at Hultsfred 2001!
