Babyshambles play secret show at Great Escape

18 May 2009

A large crowd gathered at the side of the road and the decking of the pub next door for the short six-song set.

Opening with ‘Side Of The Road’, the band were wrapped up warm for the show with lead singer Pete Doherty and guitarist Mick Whitnall both in winter coats.

During ‘Kilimangiro’ Doherty sprayed the crowd with his beer bottle before launching into a rendition of ‘Oh I Do Like To Be Beside The Seaside’. It was during ‘Fuck Forever’ that the singer got the biggest cheer however, when the ex-Libertine sat on his monitor before it toppled over and threw him backwards.

The band played:

'Side Of The Road'
'Delivery'
'Pipedown'
'Beg, Steal Or Borrow'
'Killamangiro'
'Fuck Forever'

Later on in the evening Gold Teeth played in Arc on the seafront with the lead singer joining the crowd for their penultimate track ‘Everybody’ with the rest of the band crammed onto the tiny stage. “Thank you for not backing off when I came into the crowd,” he said, “when it all got a little intimate.”

Elsewhere in The Corn Exchange, African Head Charge played a bongo-heavy set mashing up African influences with reggae basslines after a very loud DJ set from Adrian Sherwood.

An upset Bonne Aparte brought Above Audio’s weekend to a close throwing equipment off of the stage after their final track. Despite drawing a very small crowd, the band played an energetic set of noise indie before storming off stage after their final track. They had to return however to pack up their instruments.

It was Golden Silvers and The King Blues who both left fans disappointed, with large queues outside the Queen’s Hotel and Komedia respectively.

Kasabian, Gang Of Four, Little Boots and Ipso Facto also performed at the final day of The Great Escape 2009.
