The Brighton band performed tracks like ‘Remember Me’ and ‘Waving Flags’ surrounded by branches and
leaves which were later flung into the crowd, along with guitarist Martin Noble.
Like a lemming Noble dropped backwards
into fans, leaving his guitar technician to fill in his parts just off stage, while the crowd carried the guitarist halfway
through the arena before dropping him twice.
Backed by trumpet and violin the group played to fans at the Sallis
Benney Theatre at a wet and windy second day of the festival. Their set went done well with the crowd who left with
smiles on their faces and branches in their hands, though singer Yan seemed a little bored throughout.
Later in
the evening Screaming Tea Party tore the Freebutt
a new bottom, despite only drawing a small crowd. The power hardcore trio played a fiery set, which included a cover of ‘Moon
River’ as an encore.
The Brute Chorus
performed to a large crowd in the claustrophobic Ocean Rooms playing hits ‘Chateau’ and ‘Grow
Fins’ before lead singer James Steel asked the crowd, “is everybody staying dry? Who’s sticking around for
The Joy Formidable? Oh good, that’s about three people,” he laughed.
Along the seafront in the Queen’s
Hotel Dananananakroyd brought down the house,
quite literally, with over-excited fans punching holes in the ceiling. Elsewhere fans were left disappointed after Golden
Silvers’ set in the Komedia and Mongrel’s late night show was cancelled
in The Water Margin.
The Great Escape 2009 continues today (16 May) with performances from Hockey, Kasabian,
Patrick Wolf and Idlewild.
