Virtual Festivals' weekly news round up
New Reading names, tickets, Nirvana and more

24 April 2009
Line-ups
The biggest announcement this week came from Reading and
Leeds Festivals without organisers having to lift a finger. The recent sunshine has obviously gone straight to Faith
No More’s heads, with the band breaking embargo to reveal on their website that they’ll be playing both
events in August.
Glastonbury were a lot more orthodox with their latest announcement, confirming
that Kasabian will play Worthy Farm this summer as Bruce Springsteen’s ‘special
guests’, but bosses were keen not to divulge much else, keeping ticket holders sweating for that little bit longer.
Isle of Wight Festival chiefs were a little more forthcoming this week, confirming that Will
Young will be joining Neil Young at the three-day event with McFly, Sneaky
Sound System, Iglu And Hartley and Sharon Corr (former fiddler for The Corrs) set
to perform too.
Also hitting headlines this week were Secret Garden Party, who confirmed that
Fat Freddy’s Drop will close the main stage of the event, and Calvin Harris who was
named as headliner for Liverpool Sound City. The Damned, Billy Bragg, The
Zutons and Little Boots are also set for the urban bash, with the latter the sole name added to
the Wychwood Festival line-up on Monday (20 April).
Sticking with city soirees, Brighton’s
Great Escape shoved aside superstition and added 13 new acts, many with an anti-folk stance including Johnny
Flynn, Mumford And Sons and Emmy The Great. Grunge legend Evan Dando
is also set for next month’s bash.
With less than 50 days to go until Download Festival
kicks off, organisers began to reveal the stage-by-stage breakdown this week, adding Hatebreed, Therapy?,
Middle Class Rut, Turbowolf, God Forbid and A Day To Remember
too.
There were more names confirmed for London’s South West Four with David Guetta
and Eric Prydz among the latest acts set to play the Clapham Common dance behemoth, while
Regina Spektor and Passion Pit were both announced for this year’s Latitude
Festival.
Somerset House Summer Series released the first acts set to perform at the
historic London venue in July this week with Grace Jones, Lily Allen and Pendulum
taking the honours for 2009 with more to be announced in coming weeks.
Norwegian producer and DJ Lindstrom
is set to play a rare festival appearance at The Big Chill, organisers confirmed on Tuesday (21 April) with
the ever-excellent Greg Wilson, Annie Nightingale and LCD Soundsystem’s Tim
Goldsworthy and Tim Sweeney also set to perform at Eastnor Castle come August.
Dance events Global Gathering and Glade Festival began to reveal details of their
smaller stages with Does It Offend You, Yeah?, The Whip and Sneaky Sound System
set to play on Global’s Tuborg Live Stage. Meanwhile Glade bosses unveiled the hosts for this year’s
Club Tent with Mulletover, Finger Lickin’ Funk and Further Project inviting
the likes of Mr C, Format B, Krafty Kuts and Soul Of Man all
given sets for the weekend.
Finally this week, student festival Beach Break Live released its
second wave of artists for this year’s event with Hadouken!, Dan Le Sac Vs Scroobius Pip,
The Nextmen, Tayo and Deekline all confirmed. Sticking with the aquatic
theme, British Sea Power head up the latest batch of acts for A Hop At The Farm with Ash,
The View and Bell X1 set to join Paul Weller, The Fratellis
and more in July.
