This year sees a change in format to the popular competition in which unsigned acts compete for two opening slots at this August's V Festival in Chelmsford and Staffordshire.

Hopeful musicians wishing to take part have until 12th April 2009 to register at www.roadtov.com, where they can upload tracks, videos, artwork and a biog.

The Charlatans and Just Jack will review the entries and each select four acts they’d like to see join them to perform live at The Great Escape Festival in Brighton from 14-16th May. The other two finalists will be decided by an online public vote.

In addition, the final ten will all appear, with their mentors, on the Road to V TV series on Virgin1 which begins on Friday 3rd April and airs on every first Friday of the month until August.

After The Great Escape performances, the mentors will whittle the finalists down to just three each. From there, it’s up to the Road to V fans and voters to decide which of the six finalists will go on to win Road to V 2009, and open V Festival in August.

Charlatans drummer Jon Brookes commented, “We as mentors will offer the truth to any band that asks us to talk with them about our experiences.  It won’t be a pupil / teacher vibe, but something more subtle, a guide or confidant.  Hopefully it will be a two-way arrangement and we will all get to share something.”

Just Jack added, “I'm really looking forward to being a Road to V mentor.  When you write songs obviously you put everything into them – however, you need honesty as an artist and you need to hear honest opinions from people”.

Previous Road To V winners include Young Knives (who went on to receive a Mercury Award nomination in 2007) and Bombay Bicycle Club (who signed a deal with Island Records in 2008).

V Festival returns to Hylands Park, Chelmsford and Weston Park, Staffs., on the weekend of 22-23rd August. The Killers and Oasis are headlining with Fatboy Slim, Razorlight, Keane, The Specials, Snow Patrol and Elbow also confirmed to appear.
