Following months of speculation, the Britpop heroes have announced that they will be reforming for a special Hyde Park show next summer.

Damon Albarn and Co will headline the London concert on 3 July with tickets going on sale this Friday (12 December).

Speaking to NME.com about the reunion lead singer Albarn said: "It just felt it was right again. It somehow feels like there's something for us to do again, we're not completely useless or pointless, we've got a reason to exist."

He refused to confirm any other appearances, but he did say that the band would be playing concerts before the Hyde Park show which could include the top slot at Glastonbury Festival.

The singer said: "We'll do something in London because that seems sensible, but we're also playing in other parts of the country working up to there."

Glastonbury organiser Emily Eavis has already hinted at a special headline performance for 2009, and Albarn would undoubtedly choose the Somerset festival due to his ties with family.

He most recently played there in 2007 as part of his Africa Express experiment on the Park Stage, which is curated by Emily.

Blur disbanded during the recording of their 2003 album 'Think Tank', with guitarist Graham Coxon departing and the band shrinking to a trio.

Blur last headlined Glastonbury Festival in 1998.
