The Danish event picked up the Microsoft Excellence Award for Environmental Sustainability which is given
to companies that use the most creative ways of sparing the environment through the use of software.
Created with German company TEGOS and implemented at the 2008 edition of the festival the system registers garbage from around the Roskilde site through photos and GPS co-ordinates taken on small portable devices.
With the data collected, the volunteers can
then set about their work collecting and sorting the 900 tonnes of rubbish generated by the 110,000 revellers in as efficient
a way as possible.
After the success of the system last year, it looks likely that the organisers will use it
again at Roskilde 2009 which will take place at Roskilde, Denmark
between 2 -5 July. Tickets for next year's event go on sale on 1 December.
Don’t be alarmed though by the guy taking photos of the festival's bins. It’s all in the name of waste disposal.
