A few covers were thrown in for good measure at the Chelmsford site, with Aerosmith and Run DMC’s ‘Walk This Way’ receiving an almighty butchering with comedy rapping from Cole and co.

It was all good fun though, with the five girls dressed in matching black prancing around to the likes of  ‘Sounds Of The Underground’ and ‘Love Machine’.

The spectacle prompted grown men to sprint to the stage to get their spot, spilling beer as they ran, and a sex-charged version of Salt’N’Peppa’s ‘Push It’ turned more than a few heads.

A return to Chelmsford for the talent show winners, their set finished with ‘Something Kinda Ooh’, as the girls cemented themselves as much a part of the V Festival furniture as bad fake tans and rubbish weather.

Earlier, The Courteeners sparked raucous scenes in the crowd as a bottle war ignited between the right and left hand sides of the crowd. ‘Not 19 Forever’ got the best reaction, with crowd surfers and beach balls bouncing over the audience. The band finished with ‘What Took You So Long’, before singer Liam Frey instructed everyone to “watch Kings Of Leon later”.

Delays played a hit heavy set, with singer Greg Gilbert demanding a 'Mexican wave' before asking them to give him his own festival moment by singing the words to ‘Long Time Coming’ back to him. The front rows duly obliged.

Gabriella Climi’s hit ‘Sweet About Me’ sparks a massive exodus from the JJB Arena once the Australian songstress plays it, but they should have stuck around for a soulful cover of ‘Whole Lotta Love’ by Led Zepellin.

Earlier on Noah And The Whale packed the Virgin Union tent, just as Will Young had done the previous day, with security forced to stop people entering as those lucky enough to be inside bopped to their smash '5 Years Time'.

Up in Staffordshire, the rain has taken its toll on the site. About 50 fans staged a huge mud fight whilst watching The Futureheads and by the time Alanis Morissette arrived on stage a small pool had developed, which had people rolling around in it.

The opening of the main arena was delayed this morning while organisers tried to clear rain water from the site and stage times were put back half an hour.
