Resplendent in a fluorescent yellow shirt, Richard Ashcroft commended the audience for being the "best live crowd
in the world" and spoke out in defiance of an article in today's Guardian that had dismissed the band's current
relevance.
Unusually for T in the Park, the crowd were fairly reserved to begin with, but a rousing 'Sonnet'
had everyone on their feet and singing along.
Likewise, a smattering of new tracks were politely received with
the old favourites (particularly from Urban Hymns) garnering the most frenzied reception.
Ashcroft dedicated 'Lucky
Man' to his wife Kate Radley, having missed their wedding anniversary to perform tonight at the festival, and 'Bitter
Sweet Symphony' to "Anyone who'll write a classic". They finished with new single, 'Love is Noise'.
The Verve Played:
'This Is Music'
'Sonnet'
'Space And Time'
'Sit And Wonder'
'History'
'Come On'
'Life's An Ocean'
'The Rolling People'
'The Drugs Don't Work'
'Lucky
Man'
'Bitter Sweet Symphony'
'Love Is Noise'
Over on the the Radio 1/NME second stage,
The Chemical Brothers rocked fans with a greatest hits set spanning their career, featuring 'Galvanise',
'Hey Boy, Hey Girl' and 'Out Of Control' and closing with an explosive 'Block Rocking Beats'.
In the King Tut's Wah Wah Hut, local heroes The Futureheads
were raising the roof with a high energy performance.
The band were in celebratory mood with frontman Barry Hyde
getting married tomorrow (Saturday) to Dananananaykroyd bassist Laura Donaghey. Guitarist Ross Millard dedicated 'Hounds
Of Love' to the singer, who told the crowd: "It's been a real pleasure to play my last gig as a single man to
you."
Earlier in the day, following an uplifting show by home girl KT Tunstall, Stereophonics had
thrilled fans with a highly charged set littered with classics and even a brief interlude of Motorhead's 'Ace of Spades'.
More than 80,000 fans arrived on-site for the first day of T in the Park, with the campsites being full to capacity
(60,000) by midday today (Friday).
Tomorrow (Saturday) sees headline sets from Rage Against The Machine,
Kaiser Chiefs, Ian Brown and Interpol.
