O2 Wireless Leeds scrapped

But pre-festival gigs planned for May/June

A stripped-down version of the London festival had been staged in Leeds' Harewood House for the last two years.

But organisers have decided to pull the plug on the northern version of the multi-day music event, after it failed to take off in the same way the London event has since its launch in 2005.

Instead, a number of warm-up gigs featuring acts playing at the Hyde Park festival this July will be held at venues around the country. The shows will be called the O2 Wireless Weekenders and are set to take place throughout May and June.

Acts already confirmed for Hyde Park include Fatboy Slim, Underworld, Bootsy Collins and Mark Ronson on Saturday, 5 July, while Counting Crows, Ben Harper and Powderfinger are booked for Sunday, 6 July.

It is unclear whether these acts will play at the warm up shows, which are scheduled for May and June, as many more bands and artists are set to be confirmed.

Live Nation had this to say: "O2 and Live Nation are determined to bring the flavour of the O2 Wireless Festival to as wide an audience as possible, by arranging a series of pre-festival gigs around the UK during May/June 2008.

"Under the banner of "O2 Wireless Weekenders", a number of confirmed artists appearing at the O2 Wireless Festival in Hyde Park, London, will take to the stage in local clubs giving music fans a unique opportunity to enjoy their respective music. Due to this new initiative, we will no longer stage the O2 Wireless Festival in Leeds."

Tickets for the Fatboy Slim-hosted Saturday are on sale now, priced £40 a day for a limited time. Buy HERE.
