American headliners for Reading/Leeds

Three US bands booked to top the bill

American headliners for Reading/Leeds

21 January 2008

For the first time in the history of the two festivals, all three headliners will be from the United States.

While Benn has refused to name the three acts, Rage Against The Machine, Green Day and Foo Fighters are the most likely combination. Outsiders could include My Chemical Romance, The Killers or Kings Of Leon.

Rage Against The Machine have been a long-term target for Benn, who told VF just before last year's festival that he would love to bring them back in 2008. The LA band reformed for last year's Coachella and are playing the Big Day Out tour later this month in Australia.

Green Day have a new album planned for 2008 and are a firm favourite with the Reading and Leeds crowds. They last played the weekender in 2004 and Benn later told VF it was one of the best comeback sets he has ever seen.

Foo Fighters are also huge crowd pullers and love playing UK festivals. They have headlined at least one major festival here for the last three summers, including Reading and Leeds in 2005.

Whether they make it a fourth or not, Benn has told the BBC that his headliners for the two August bank holiday events are "in place".

He said: "Interesting this year is that - probably for the first time, in my memory - we're actually going with three American headliners. I'm not at liberty to let you know who they are."

It is also the first time in nine years that the two festivals have not been sponsored by Carling, after Festival Republic and the beer company decided to part ways.

Benn is hoping to encourage fans to be more environmentally aware, following green achievements at his other festival, Latitude, which constructs its bars from reclaimed wood.

The Festival Republic boss is hoping to build on a deposit scheme on paper cups at Reading and Leeds, introduced last year.

He said: "At Reading and Leeds we put a 10p deposit on all the paper cups that we sold all the pints in. We had a 96% return rate on those paper cups."

Stay posted for the full confirmed line up for both festivals, which should be announced at the end of February.
