Spotlight: Anthem Of The Summer

Who had you hollering along the loudest?

Spotlight: Anthem Of The Summer

23 October 2007

Anthem Of The Summmer

The ultimate test of any song is how it’s received live – and there’s no better place than at festivals.  Irrespective of genre, artist or audience a great track will always stand out.

A good song can kick-start a career or top a festival but the best of the best will define an entire summer.  Previous winners of this award include Kaiser Chiefs with ‘Oh My God’ and Franz Ferdinand with ‘Take Me Out’, which should give you a good indication of the award’s stature.

But who deserves the coveted prize this time round? Perhaps nu-rave’s golden boys Klaxons have earned it for the ghoul-echoing ‘Golden Skans’ - the track that first pricked Mercury Music Prize ears. Or maybe you prefer Arctic Monkeys with their social observation of loved-up Klaxonites in ‘Fluorescent Adolescent’.

Neuf art-rockers Arcade Fire could be in the running with their gleefully shouty and epic anthem ‘No Cars Go’, but they will have to beat off competition from pint-sized indie escapees The Enemy with the catchy ‘Away From Here’.

Dundee’s grubby garage rockers The View had  a top three hit with student sing-a-long ‘Same Jeans’, but is it more memorable than The Gossip’s skin thumping ‘Standing In The Way Of Control’?

Did you dig Dan Le Sac Vs Scroobius Pip’s hip-hop slant on Moses’ Ten Commandments with ‘Thou Shall Always Kill’? Did it make you want to reach for your sword? If so, remember the ‘pen is mightier than the sword’ and tick that ballot box instead.

One of the commandments reads: “Thou shall not buy NME,” but if you took that on board you may not have heard about Kate Nash’s pop-masterpiece ‘Foundations’ or even those top Yorkshire sleuths Pigeon Detectives as heard on their jaunty and addictive ‘Take Her Back’.

But does the award deserve to sail the Atlantic?  Perhps Fall Out Boy’s kickback against the emo-scene ‘This Ain’t A Scene It’s An Arms Race’ sent those afternoon vocal chords into overdrive in front of your favourite main stage.

Here is the full list of nominees:
