Best Pop Act (in association with The Big Issue)

When Smash Hits went under, closely followed by the mighty Top of the Pops, the demise of pop looked to be as rapid as Michelle McManus’ career.  If only they’d held on a little longer…

Today the pop scene is the strongest it’s been in a long time, with current stars proving the importance of a live performance and the irrelevance of miming, something that has put them in good stead with festival organisers, who've booked them in abundance this summer.

This award is not only a landmark for the genre but also for the festival scene as it diversifies the acts on offer.  Scissor Sisters and Girls Aloud have walked away with the gong previously but who is the best of the Top 40 bunch this time round?

It could be down to the column inch queens. Amy Winehouse has been in more papers than she has pubs this summer, but don’t forget this is about how well she performed at festivals.  Lily Allen is nominated for the second year running and with a host of festival appearances, collaborations and covers she has to be a frontrunner again.

Kate Nash’s success has snowballed over the summer, culminating with packed tents at the Carling Weekend Festivals for the chance to hear ‘Foundations’, but she faces strong competition from falsetto-pop supremo Mika and the genre-crushing scenester Patrick Wolf.

But it could be the turn of guitar welding troubadours to pick up the award.  James Morrison worked his magic in the sunshine at the Isle of Wight Festival while Paolo Nutini cheekily crooned ‘I Want To Be Like You’ from the Jungle Book at V.

New Young Pony Club may have been piped by Klaxons for the Mercury Music Prize but the electronica-indie band have a good chance to outshine their pop contemporaries here.

Then again Robyn’s dormant career awoke late in the summer when ‘With Every Heartbeat’ topped the charts, resulting in a large Bestival Big Top crowd to impress in September, while McFly energetically entertained the throngs at V Festival.

The full list of nominations are:

Amy Winehouse
James Morrsion
Kate Nash
Lily Allen
McFly
Mika
New Young Pony Club
Paolo Nutini
Patrick Wolf
Robyn
