Huw Stephens to curate new Cardiff festival - 'Swn'

06 July 2007

In the same week that Fflam Festival came a cropper, a new festival has been announced for south Wales to showcase new bands from west of the border.

Curated by Radio 1 taste-maker Huw Stephens, Swn will unfold across various venues in the Welsh capital over three days between 9-11 November.

Welsh for 'sound', Swn has been inspired by world famous showcases like South By South West and will focus on Welsh music with a smattering of international acts too.

Stephens said: "One of the things that makes Cardiff a special city is its commitment and enthusiasm for live music of all genres, with something going on all the time.

“I’ve been lucky enough to go to inner city festivals around the world, and have been thinking about starting a festival in Cardiff for a few years.”

No acts have been confirmed yet, but bubbling Welsh bands such as The Hot Puppies, Los Campesinos! (pictured) and Radio Luxembourg are the type likely to be involved.

Stephens said: “November in Cardiff will be injected with a shot of excitement thanks to a brilliant bill of bands, diverse DJs, folk, art exhibitions and films, specially curated nights put on by well respected labels, more quality nights by local promoters who continually put on gigs all year round, and a lot of special surprises.

"The thrill of going from venue to venue to see different bands and DJs is unique, and Cardiff will be the perfect city to host a festival of this kind.

"You won't be disappointed."
