Rumours of the global gigs have been circulating since last week, when US Vice President turned eco-warrior Al Gore got together with several heads from the UK record industry.

It is believed he urged them to support his plans to stage a series of massive shows, on a similar scale to 2005's Live 8, and asked for the support of some of the world's biggest artists.

One of those, Muse, revealed during Wednesday's BRIT Awards, that they've already been approached to play at one of the spectacles, which are deliberately being held on 07/07/07 to enhance the date's significance.

The band are due to play Oxegen that day before heading to Scotland to play T In The Park the following day, which the band say is an "issue".

However, Virtual Festivals has heard rumours suggesting the headliners at this year's Oxegen and T In The Park may differ slightly (the same two acts usually headline both events), which could mean Muse playing Oxegen, but not T In The Park.

Asked about the band's involvement in the project, Muse drummer Dom Howard told XFM: "We've been asked yes, there's going to be something happening, some big global gig. Apparently it's going to happen.

"I don't know whether anyone is supposed to know about it, but it's happening in seven continents around the world, all on the seventh in 24 hours, and there's going to be loads of bands playing. That's all I know."

When asked if the band would be playing singer Matt Bellamy replied: "We're thinking about it. There's an issue so we'll see how it goes. We've got a gig on that day in Ireland, you see, so we need to work out if we can make it or not. That's basically what it depends on."

Other acts rumoured for the series of gigs include U2, The Spice Girls, The Police, Oasis, Robbie Williams, Radiohead, Keane, Kylie and Coldplay. The location of the UK gig is rumoured to be Wembley Stadium.
