The Who confirm Glastonbury

The legendary rockers will close the world famous music event, which takes place over the weekend of 22-24 June at Worthy Farm in Somerset.

Amazingly, it is the first time the band - who formed around 40 years ago - will have appeared at the festival.

Guitarist Pete Townshend admits it was a great moment telling his 17-year-old son Joseph he and bandmate Roger Daltrey had been asked to perform.

He said: "It's the coolest thing in the f**king world! I'm 61 and I can tell my son I'm headlining Glastonbury. I can say to him, 'Come down, bring your friends.'"

The proud dad also revealed that playing festivals has been an important part of the band's comeback. The Who played T In The Park and Hyde Park Calling last year, and Townsend has vowed to wow crowds at Glastonbury.

He said: "It goes on and on and on and on and on. It gets better and better and better and better.

"It is more and more fun. But this chapter is over in July 2007 so if you want to catch the new Who at their most effective for 20 years, come and join us.

"It's great to have been around for this length of time and still be playing new material, having it so well received and people liking the music. Life doesn't get any better than that.

"Festivals are really important to us. They are incredibly important for reaching a young audience. That's what keeps our music alive, singing to young people. Our music still resonates today."

Other acts rumoured to play Glastonbury this year include Arctic Monkeys, Bjork, The Killers, Kasabian, Kaiser Chiefs, Arcade Fire and The Police.

The Who's Glastonbury performance will be part of an extensive European tour which also takes in a festival appearance at the new Knowsley Hall Music Festival in Liverpool on Saturday, 23 June.
