The Police for Glasto or IOW?
02 January 2007
Early indications suggest that 2007 may be the year the red-top papers fight their ongoing circulation battles on the vicious front commonly known as 'music news'.
On the same day The Sun claimed The Killers will be headlining V Festival, The Mirror has revealed news of a reunion by creepy crooners The Police, best known for their stalker anthem 'Every Breath You Take'.
Where African babies appear to have been the 'must have' accessory for the over-50s celebrity last year, it seems this time round it could be all about having a forgotten drummer no one likes by your side.
First, Phil 'Buster' Collins decides to inflict Genesis back on a public that's just about managed to forget him (minus Peter 'The Only Good Bit' Gabriel, of course), and now tantric lentil-shagger Sting seems intent on supporting his '70s MOR revival.
Reports suggest The Police will play a string of dates during May and June, which could include either a high profile set at the Isle Of Wight Festival, Glastonbury and/or Hyde Park Calling.
All three festivals have a tradition of including 'old timers' in their lineups. Procol Harum, Ray Davies and Lou Reed have all played the IOW Fest in recent years, while Willie Nelson, Brian Wilson and Paul McCartney have all played Glastonbury recently. The first ever Hyde Park Calling last year included Roger Waters and The Who as headliners.
Sting famously headlined the Sunday night at Glasto back in 1997. An announcement regarding The Police is reportedly due to be made in the coming weeks.
