Q Awards Nominations

Did you know that REM used to be the house band at Camden's Dingwalls? No. Neither did I. VF's own philosophising fountain of trivia, JB, maintains the interest (with utter drivel I now admit...where did I drag up that falatious fact from? It is true, however, that REM played their second ever UK gig here between slots on The Tube and at The Marquee - so I'm not completely losing it!) whilst we finish our drinks, admire The Cooper Temple Clause's hair (sic) and consider who we want to win at next week's Q Awards. We reckon some bands are gonna win it. In fact, we'd put money on it.

Rather amusing were the various 'noises' that the industry packed club rattled off to particular announcements. Extra strength boos could be heard jeering the likes of U2, Moby and Nickleback. They were, however, nothing compared to the unanimous roar of disapproval which greeted the bitter little Welsh dwarf and his stupid haired friends in Stereophonics. Pete Waterman and Simon Cowell seemed free from disapproval (probably due to the fact they employ many of the people attending), whilst Coldplay and White Stripes appear to be the effortless favourites.

The evening itself is fun, if uneventful. A typically shambolic Electric Soft Parade performance ends with Alex trashing the drum kit after guitar and mic problems. It appeared as if they'd maybe been licking a bit too much sugar from their Dolly Mixtures, but maybe it was just the London vibe which killed their normally striking blend of rock splinters and saccharine indie melodies.

Eighties Matchbox B-Line Disaster don't major in the kind of songs you can hum on the bus, but if you feel like ripping a few of the seats off and throwing them at pensioners, then this is the music for you. They're still searching for some kind of inimitability, but the layered, crucifying riffs have a strangely engaging feel to them. Kind of like standing next to a large fan with a strong magnet. Bless.

Anyway, we can't wait until next Monday for the unveiling of this year's winners. If you need more of a Q fix in the meantime, or want to have a go voting, then visit www.q4music.com.
