Ms DYNAMITE: SHE BANGS
The MOBO (Music Of Black Origin) Awards were held last night at the London Docklands Arena, with capital favourite, MS Dynamite walking away with three awards. The
garage emcee and hip hop starlet won Best Newcomer, Best UK Act and Best Single for 'It Takes More'.
The London born 21-year old, snapped
by VF at the Mercury Music Prize Awards in London's Grosvenor House Hotel two weeks ago, where she won the award for Album
Of The Year, duets with none other than Robbie Williams on his comeback single 'Feel'. He's clearly seen the bandwagon passing
quite early, but let's face it, there are many worse ones he could jump on. Notice he's not into the Appletons anymore.
Other MOBOs included
potshumous Aaliyah (Best Video) and Lisa 'Left Eye' Lopez (Oustanding Achievement). The event featured appearances from Sugababes,
Craig David and Chaka Khan who played 'I'm Every Woman' upon winning the award for Lifetime Achievement'.
People hadn't
just braved the cool air stepping from their limos to the entrance at the back of the arena though, there was a small gathering
of
anti-homophobia
protestors outside too, and they weren't autograph hunting. Despite the tube strike, they had come out to enforce their
views, presumably against the lyrical content in much of black music, without minders or nice cars. They would however,
be extremely hard-pressed to find any such evil in anything by MS Dynamite or Mr David. Still a cheap laugh is as good as any other.
Other winners were: Ashanti
(Best R&B Act), Sean Paul (Reggae Act), Mis-teeq (Garage Act), Michelle Williams (Gospel Act), Norah Jones (Jazz Act),
Angelique Kidjo (World Music), Neptunes (Producer), Steve Sutherland (UK DJ), Street Politiks (Unsung Award), and Jimmy Cliff
(Contribution to Urban Music).
