Madonna for Coachella 2006

Madonna played Live 8 last year but Coachella will be her first ever proper festival appearance. The US fest takes place at the Empire Polo Fields near Palm Springs on 29-30 April.

Madge said: "I'm especially excited about playing Coachella before I start my own tour."

The pop legend was approached by organisers because they wanted someone on a par with Daft Punk, who are headlining the Dance Tent on the Saturday night.

Promoter Paul Tollet said: "We've got Daft Punk headlining the Dance Tent the first night and we were looking for something else that good. It just came up and we're super excited. She's so dance oriented right now."

Other bands already confirmed include headliners Depeche Mode and Tool, plus Franz Ferdinand, Bloc Party, Sasha, Massive Attack, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Sigur Ros and Scissor Sisters.
