The cards are expected to include a photograph of the ticket-holder, plus an electronic
chip with personal details, to prevent tickets being sold on internet auction sites at extortionate prices or forged.
Tickets
will be available from 9am on Sunday, 3 April, priced £125. They will undoubtedly sell out within a matter
of hours.
Michael Eavis told the BBC: "There is only one place in the world where
you will be able to get tickets. That will be the official source. If you get them
anywhere else, you won't get in."
However, when Virtual Festivals contacted the
Glastonbury Festivals office, manager Dick Vernon told us that nothing has yet been confirmed.
He
said: "Michael has been talking to a few people about this but we haven't committed to anything yet. We should finalise
everything in about a week, once all the systems have been tested. We'll announce it officially then."
The fight against unofficial ticket sales has been going on for several years now, initially
to tackle the problem of forged tickets but, more recently, to ensure that music fans aren't ripped off by touts charging
inflated prices.
Eavis' daughter Emily said recently that it would be, "quite a big step in terms of
ticketing for events. As long as it's approached in the right way, it might really work,
it might really change the system."
Last year, organisers insisted that
every ticket holder show some kind of ID when they entered the festival, but touts
simply offered fake IDs with the tickets they sold. Many genuine music fans forgot to bring any ID and
were still allowed in - eventually!
