REM, currently on tour in Europe, are the first band to be confirmed for the festival, which takes place at Seaclose Park between 10-12 June.
Guitarist Peter Buck said: "As someone who grew up in America, the Isle of Wight was a distant legend. We're all really excited to play on the same stage as Dylan, The Who and Hendrix have in the past. Will there be nude anarchists this time...?"
Last year performances from David Bowie, The Who, The
Charlatans, and many more, drew crowds of over 30,000. The 2005 event is the
fifth annual Isle Of Wight Festival since it has been revived.
It was best known for a series
of legendary events in the late '60s, featuring the likes of Bob Dylan, Free, The
Doors, and Jefferson Airplane, culminating in 1970 when 600,000 hippies descended
on the island to see Jimi Hendrix perform his penultimate concert.
Festival Organisers SOLO said:
"It's fantastic that REM. are flying in to start their UK tour early at the festival, we are proud to present one of the best
live bands in the world today"
