The 22-year-old singer, winner of the 2014 BRIT Critics' Choice Award and the BBC's Sound of 2014 poll, has already had to cancel an Australian tour due to a haemorrhage on his vocal cords.

Now a specialist doctor in the US has recommended suspension microlaryngoscopy surgery to deal with the issue, which will mean the 'Stay with Me' singer taking the next eight weeks off in recovery.

The announcement will affect live dates in Asia, USA, and Europe. Festival shows that Sam Smith has today had to cancel include Hangout Festival on the Gulf Shores of Alabama, Radio 1’s Big Weekend in Norwich, Wildlife Festival in Brighton, Northside Festival in Denmark and Rock Werchter in Belgium.

He left the following message for his fans.
