19 year old Leeds singer, Rhianna is a modern popstar with a stunning voice who works a unique future retro chic. Cool like Sade lost in Shoreditch, Rhianna name-checks Kate Bush, Nelly Furtado and Patti Smith as inspirations, creating a style that she modestly describes as "cool pop". Her debut single, 'Oh Baby', stormed into the top 20 of the singles chart last month and her follow-up single, 'Word Love' (Out August 5th) plus an impressive debut album ready to go look set to bring her even higher up the charts. But this isn't Rhianna's first foray into the music world, as at 16 years old she was singing backing vocals on stage for her brother Leigh's group LSK, having given up five A Levels to join the tour!
Originating from Maidenhead, Kid Galahad, are the four piece band taking the guitar music scene by storm! The boys signed with Ignition Records in September 2000 and haven't looked back since! Working with the one and only Jim Abbiss (Bjork, Sneaker Pimps, DJ Shadow) Kid Galahad have developed their own distinct sound! With the recent release of the debut album "Gold Dust Noise", sell out gigs across the UK and an ever growing fan base including London radio station Xfm, Kid Galahad look set for very good things.
V2002 promoters are pleased to welcome the Bay Area's very own rock'n'roll girl band, The Donnas to the NME stage, currently whipping up storm in their native US. This band couldn't be more appropriately named, as they're all called......yes you guessed it......Donna, starring (in alphabetical order) Donna A, Donna C, Donna F and Donna R! The girls have been fast establishing themselves as a potent force on the US rock scene. Their latest album is "Turn 21" and looks set to build on the reputation that's been growing over the past few years.
From the first thumping downbeat to the first synthesised chord it's plain to hear that Venus Hum offer a sound totally new and unique to the music world. Self-styled as the "New Sound of Nashville", their "Hummingbirds" EP has been winning them fans across the US giving people a whole new take on Nashville music. With Annette's amazing vocal and stage presence, Tony and Kips "NASA esque" keyboard and laptop trickery, this trio are definitely ones not to be missed at this years V.
Glasgow 5-piece, Ashton Lane share a management team with V2001 headliners Texas and have built up a major following in their native Scotland, with fans and press alike. They release their debut single, 'Yesterday's Too Late' through EMI in September. Drawing on influences from the likes of Joni Mitchell, Matchbox 20 and fellow V performers, Counting Crows, expect some folk-inspired rock with melodic guitars topped off with huge choruses.
