Foo Fighters are the first act announced for one of the biggest dates on the mainland European festival calendar, they will headline the opening night on Thursday June 25.

The band are celebrating two decades together and released their eighth studio 'Sonic Highways' last week. The album has, rather uniquely, seen the five band members travelling the American musical landscape to record each song on the album in eight different cities. The whole process, which has taken them from Chicago to Los Angeles, has been recorded for a HBO series, currently broadcasting on BBC4.

The announcement will further fuel the widely-believed rumour that Foo Fighters will be headlining Glastonbury Festival 2015 next June. The two festivals share the same weekend and announcing Foo Fighters for the Thursday night at Rock Werchter means they’re currently free to top the Pyramid Stage on either the Friday, Saturday or Sunday night.

Rock Werchter 2015 will take place in Werchter, Rotselaar, Belgium from Thursday 25 to Sunday 28 June.

Rock Werchter welcomes more than 140,000 visitors every year for four days on the festival grounds, which saw music across three stages: Main Stage, KluB C and The Barn.

Foo Fighters tickets go on sale on Saturday 29 November at 9am and will be available through
